Featured Projects

MasterCard Foundation - The Center for Inclusive Growth: - As the philanthropic hub of MasterCard, the Center leverages the company’s expertise, data analytics, technology, and partnerships to advance actionable insights, global programs, and thought leadership. In 2018, MasterCard committed 20 percent of its savings from the US and European tax reform to establish the MasterCard Impact Fund, a non-profit organization that will make up to $500 million in charitable grants.

To inform their capital allocations and programmatic efforts, Arturo Franco, Vice President of Research for The Center, wanted to develop a robust framework for creating inclusive economies. In 2020, partnering with the Centre for Public Impact, Rembrandt Collective co-wrote Built4All, a framework for transforming the economy. The team interviewed and facilitated research panels with Nobel prize winners, economists, policy experts, academics, and foundation leaders worldwide to understand the actions business, government, and civil society can take together to restore the social contract and build economies where everyone can flourish. In 2021, Built4All has served as a north star in collective action with local, national, and international leaders to transform the economy.

The Laudato Si Challenge Foundation - In 2015, His Holiness Pope Francis released his landmark encyclical Laudato Sì, Caring for Our Common Home. According to the New York Times, this papal document written to the world was “an urgent, accessible call to action, making a case that all is interconnected, including the solutions to the grave environmental crisis.” To turn this document into reality and help those most affected by ecological disaster, a group of investors, CEOs, and foundation leaders created the Laudato Si Challenge Foundation.

In 2019 and 2020, the foundation CEO asked Rembrandt Collective to build both intellectual capital and partnerships. For the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, Rembrandt Collective developed the strategic concept note for the Challenge and conducted due diligence on 21 private sector commitments (Air BnB, BNP Paribas, Draper University, etc.) that are addressing the root causes of forced displacement and climate change. In addition, Rembrandt Collective recruited corporate partners to the Challenge and facilitated partnerships with Catholic humanitarian organizations to help over 50,000 refugee families.

Bloomberg Philanthropies - Over his lifetime, Mayor Mike Bloomberg has given $11.1 billion to philanthropy in five key areas: the arts, education, the environment, government innovation, and public health. Bloomberg Philanthropies works to improve the lives of millions of people in more than 810 cities and 170 countries. In 2020 alone, Bloomberg Philanthropies invested $1.6 billion around the world. Mayor Bloomberg wanted to understand how to use his philanthropy to better prepare working families for the future of work and the advances in artificial intelligence and other automation technologies.

In 2018 and 2019, Rembrandt Collective provided executive-level research on global trends impacting work and recommended programs to help American workers adapt and flourish in the 21st century. The project included integrating ethnographic research of working families, expert interviews with economists, mayors, and economic development experts, and strategy sessions with Bloomberg staff to craft advice for Mayor Bloomberg. As part of this work, Rembrandt Collective provided policy analysis and recommendations on anti-trust, economic development, job training, work subsidies, and R&D policy.

The Mayors Challenge - Mayor Bloomberg understands that his fellow mayors and local leaders are on the front lines of problem-solving. Because of their proximity to the problems, they have the power to bring about real change and empower citizens to solve many of society’s most complex challenges. But they are also confronted by constraints: financial, societal, or governmental.

Mayor Bloomberg created The Mayors Challenge to help these leaders overcome whatever roadblocks they faced by working with them to implement a flexible, innovative approach to governing and by providing them with the resources and support they need to do improve the lives of the people living in their cities. In 2017, Rembrandt Collective provided design thinking, strategy, and facilitation services for a nationwide competition to encourage innovation at the local level with mayors and their teams from 308 cities across the United States.

Joe Ritchie Family Office - Pope Francis started his papacy with this stinging critique of trickle-down theory, an approach that uses large tax cuts for the wealthy to stimulate the economy. This critique drew a particular ire from American political and business leaders inside and outside the Catholic Church. Economists and academics piled on critiquing the Pope's naivete and lack of understanding of markets and economics.

Mr. Joe Ritchie, founder of Chicago Research and Trading and Fox River Partners, has been an economic advisor to multiple presidents and is recognized as one of the pioneers in computer-driven trading. Joe heard Pope Francis's statements on the economy and thought the opposite of the critics. As a market practitioner, he understood that Pope Francis was right in saying that "trickle-down economics'' did not match how markets or economies actually worked. Instead, these policies concentrated wealth, lowered productivity, and destabilized democracies.

From 2016 to 2021, Rembrandt Collective facilitated a collective of economists, political donors, CEOs, and financial leaders seeking to address the social and political instability created by trickle-down policies. As part of this work for the Ritchie Family Office, Rembrandt Collective wrote a policy paper, Renewing the American Dream: Turning the Dials from Rigged to Right.

The Global Parliament of Mayors - Mayor Marvin Rees, a British Labour Party politician who has been Mayor of Bristol since May 2016, saw an opportunity to help his city of Bristol solve local challenges by accessing international resources and networks via the Global Parliament of Mayors. The GPM is a governance body of, by, and for mayors from all continents.

As Chair of the Executive Committee, Mayor Reese convened the 2018 Parliament in Bristol. In partnership with Fox River Foundation, Rembrandt Collective supported the Mayor and GPM with strategy and policy analysis on three strategic global challenges: pandemic preparedness, migration, and public safety. Rembrandt Collective interviewed experts, facilitated strategy sessions, and drafted policy statements that were debated and agreed to by the Parliament and used to inform the mayors’ collective action with national and international institutions.
